If You're Looking for a Website Designer in Ann Arbor, Here's Why We Might Be a Good Fit (and Why We Might Not)

By PlusCode

Hey, it's Dave Baldwin here. If you're searching for a website designer in Ann Arbor, you've got options. Agencies downtown. Freelancers across the U of M ecosystem. Template services promising a launch by Friday. So before you spend an hour on a discovery call with anyone, including me, here's an honest look at whether PlusCode is the right shop for your project.

Let's address the obvious one first

I'm not technically in Ann Arbor. PlusCode is based in Milan, about 15 minutes south. I'd rather lead with that than have you find out three sentences in.

I've built sites for plenty of Ann Arbor businesses. A handyman service. A property management company. A lawn care company. A nonprofit. An office cleaning business. A kitchen and bath remodeler. A tire shop. An auto repair shop. A retail storefront. A billboard advertising company. A local networking organization. Geography hasn't been a problem for any of them. Web work happens over screen shares and emails and the occasional coffee, not at a desk in your building.

If anything, being just outside Ann Arbor has been useful. I'm close enough to meet in person when it matters. I'm far enough out to keep my overhead low, which keeps pricing reasonable for small businesses who'd rather not pay for a downtown office they'll never see.

Why we might be a good fit

You want a custom designed site, not a template. Every site I build is designed around your business, your customers, and how you actually work. I don't drop you into a Wix theme or a WordPress builder. The site gets built to fit the business, not the other way around.

You want a partner who listens before pitching. Discovery is the longest part of any project I run, on purpose. I want to understand the people you're trying to reach and the value you actually deliver before I touch a wireframe.

You want someone local who knows southeast Michigan. I've worked across Ann Arbor, Saline, Ypsilanti, Milan, Dexter, and a dozen other towns in this area. I know the businesses here. I know what your customers expect. I'm at chamber events. I'm part of the same community you are.

You want the work to keep working after launch. I don't disappear once the site goes live. The checklist for new builds is currently 36 items and I keep adding to it as Google and AI search change the rules. The sites I built five years ago still rank because launch day wasn't the finish line.

You care about how things look and feel, not just what they do. Design isn't decoration. It's how your customers decide whether to trust you in the first few seconds. If you've ever landed on a competitor's site and thought "this looks cheap," you already know what's at stake.

Why we might not be a good fit

This is the part most agencies leave out. Here's where I tend to be wrong for someone.

You want to stay on WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace. I build custom solutions designed for your exact needs. If you're committed to a platform that forces you into a template, you'll be happier with someone who specializes in that platform.

You need a website launched in two weeks. Discovery takes time. Design takes time. Testing takes time. If you're up against a hard deadline measured in days instead of months, I'm going to disappoint you. Better to find someone who works that fast and owns it.

You're shopping primarily on price. I'm not the cheapest option in Ann Arbor and I'm not trying to be. If the lowest bidder is what you need, I respect that, but it isn't me.

Your current website is doing fine and you love it. I'd rather tell you to keep what you've got than sell you something you don't need. If your site looks great, ranks well, and converts the way you want, save your money for something else.

You're not interested in expertise outside your own. Web design, SEO, and AI search change quickly. I need a relationship where you trust me to bring you what I'm learning, and I need to be able to trust that you'll consider it. If you already know exactly what you want and just need hands on a keyboard, you're better off with a freelancer who'll execute without pushback.

You have an in-house development team. Teams with their own developers usually have the resources to build their own systems, and they should. I'm at my best for businesses without that bench.

What happens if we are a fit

If you've read this far and you're nodding more than you're shaking your head, let's talk. The easiest way to reach me is by phone at 734-249-8028 or by email at dave@pluscodedesign.com. No form to fill out, no contact funnel, no auto-responder. Just me, usually within a few hours.

The first conversation is free and there's no pressure. I'll ask some questions, you'll ask some questions, and we'll both have a much better sense of whether this is the right match. If it isn't, I'll often have a recommendation for someone who'd be a better fit. That's how this should work.
