Healthy Kids U.P. was introduced in 2017 as a way to combat the childhood obesity epidemic and to coordinate and support school programming in a rural setting. Funded by a Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, Healthy Kids U.P. started out as a partnership between local Health Departments in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University Extension, and local intermediate school districts. The project quickly evolved into a U.P. community resource guide for schools and community partners launching in October 2019.
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has always had a soft spot in our hearts, so when we had a chance to build a website to help kids in the U.P., we jumped at it. This was our second Michigan State Extension project and it provided unique challenges. The vision was to create a searchable resource for people looking to support their kids. We built an interactive map feature to help people to find resources closest to them.
